Body Language in the Workplace

IBody language is a very important topic whether in relevance to job seekers, to employees, or to managers. It has been long promoted, and proven as per research, that only 7% of communication is verbal, while 93% is based on body language. When these contrast, body language is the party that wins the fight. So it was imminent for us to talk more about it, and here we are..

As you spend most of your day at the workplace, body language in the workplace is essential to the success of the individual and the organization. You are judged daily by your body language cues. We highlight herein some of the key ingredients of such success at the workplace:

Eye Contact

Eye contact importance cannot be stressed enough when you are communicating with fellow workers/managers. Maintaining eye contact gives respect to the other person, and conveys they are the most important person to you, but also leads to trust. And this is what we all seek, right?

Avoid Blocking Factors

Blocking factors are any action/item that prevent the other person from feeling direct communication to you. This includes crossing your hands while talking, standing behind a chair, or speaking from behind a monitor/screen .. all are examples of blocking factors.

Be Animated

Take a look at key speakers; one of their most important traits is moving their hands while speaking! Let your hands do some of the talking, as gestures give confidence in the other person. You can move around while speaking at times, but do not drive the other person to dizziness. Placing your hand on the other person’s shoulder will make him/her feel closer, but be careful some people can become irritated with such gestures, especially if from the opposite sex.

Sit up straight

Stand up tall, or sit up straight. Head up and back straight. Lean forward slightly when sitting. Such postures communicate confidence and engagement. For example while sitting at your desk, sitting in the right manner will give your manager the right impression that you are committed and interested in your job.

Smile

Your facial expressions are an important aspect of your body language, as people looking at your face will react to your facial expressions.  So make sure you have the right expressions (smiling) if you want others to act positively towards you.

This is our take into body language in the workplace, and these were some of the body language advises we have for your success at the workplace. What is your experience?
